February

3rd – Golden Age Activity Centre

11:am to 1:pm – A Taste of India ($7.50/person – price includes lunch)

Menu: Mulligatawny Soup, Butter Chicken with Naan Bread, Rice Pudding

Join us as we travel to South East Asia for a culinary adventure. See how to make this classic soup, a main course and how to jazz up a simple rice pudding. Topics include: spice intolerance, different rices, creative twists on simple desserts.

10th – Golden Age Activity Centre

11:am to 1:pm – A Taste of Italy ($7.50/person – price includes lunch)

Menu: Antipasto, Fettuccine Alfredo, Tiramisu

This week we discuss how to prepare the perfect meal for one, two or more when entertaining guests. We also look at how to make fresh pasta and REAL Fettuccine Alfredo. To finish off this lunch, we present a “de-constructed” Tiramisu, an easy way to make a astounding presentation for yourself or for your guests. Topics include: low-fat, gluten-free and lactose intolerance.

Menu: Thai Slaw Salad with Peanut Dressing, Grilled Sesame-Ginger Beef over Red Rice, Lime Mousse

Make these simple, healthy dishes for much less than you’d expect. Thai cuisine is easy to prepare, stores well and offers opportunity to be very creative. Best of all, it’s sooo yummy! Topics include: low sodium, colourful presentations and allergies.

Menu: Southern Slaw, Pulled Pork on a Bun, Carolina Peach Cobbler

Come enjoy a little Southern Hospitality as we demystify Southern BBQ. We show you how to make our famous Southern Slaw, Pulled Pork in the oven or slow-cooker, and an easy-peasy Peach Cobbler. Topics include: international BBQ, smoked foods and cost-saving tips.

Menu: Pizza Soup, Personal Pizza, Dessert Pizza

Preparing pizza is easier than you think. And, you’re not limited to just bread topped with cheese and tomatoes. Try making a Pizza Soup and a Dessert Pizza. Don’t know how? Join us for this week’s discussion and find out how you can make these and more. Topics include: bread making, artisanal pizza and tips for improving nutrition in recipes.

Menu: Egg Cup Appetizer, Mixed Herb and 3-Cheese Fritatta, Crème Caramel

Over the past few decades, eggs have taken a bad rap. They are incredibly nutritious and highly versatile. We look at various ways to prepare eggs for lunch or supper, after all they’re not just for breakfast. Topics include: cooking methods for eggs, preventing eggs from sticking to the pan and egg nutrition.

17th – Golden Age Activity Centre

11:am to 1:pm – Potato Madness ($7.50/person – price includes lunch)

Menu:  Loaded Baked Potato Chowder, Roast Lamb with Colcannon, Strawberry and Chocolate Boxty

Ah the luck o’ the Irish. What better way to celebrate St. Patty’s day than with a potato-inspired Irish menu. Topics include: conventional and unconventional uses for potatoes, and tips for selecting the right potato for your recipe.

24th – Golden Age Activity Centre

11:am to 1:pm – Just Veggies ($7.50/person – price includes lunch)

Menu:  Mixed Veg Straw Salad with Herb Dressing , Grilled Veg Tian, Carrot-Orange Mousse Cups

No, they are not just for vegetarians! Veggies can be used in many ways that you might not think of. Today we explore some crazy uses for vegetables, including a vegetable dessert! Topics include: fruits vs. veg – what’s the difference?, cooking methods of different veggies and nutritional value of veggies.

The first segment of our series: “A Lunch Time Discussion on Food” comes to a close. We will determine the menu and topics of discussion based on on-going feedback from participants. We will post these one week in advance of this session.
